Growing Capable Kids in an AI World: Why Technology Should Expand Learning—Not Replace Living
Artificial intelligence is everywhere.
It writes, answers questions, creates pictures, translates languages, explains math problems and produces information in seconds. New technology can open doors for children who need additional support, give teachers new ways to present material and help students explore subjects far beyond the walls of a classroom.
That potential is exciting—and ignoring it would not prepare children for the world they are entering.
But preparing children for a technology-rich future does not mean placing a screen in front of them at every opportunity. It means teaching them when technology is useful, when it should be questioned and when it is time to close the device and experience the world for themselves.
At CalKids Learning Academy, we believe children need both technological literacy and real-life capability.
They need to know how to use modern tools, including artificial intelligence, but they also need to read books, write with pencils, move their bodies, work with their hands, solve problems, meet people, ask questions, create things, make mistakes and try again.
Technology can help children learn—but it cannot do the living for them.
The Current Controversy Is Bigger Than Cheating
Much of the early conversation about artificial intelligence in schools focused on academic honesty.
Would students use AI to write essays, complete homework or solve problems without understanding the material? How would teachers determine whether a student’s work truly reflected the student’s ability?
Those questions still matter, but the discussion has become much larger.
Parents, educators, researchers and government agencies are now asking what may be an even more important question:
What happens when technology stops being a learning tool and begins replacing parts of childhood itself?
In September 2026, more than 1,000 San Francisco parents, teachers and community members had signed a petition calling for restrictions on screen time and artificial intelligence in city schools. Their concerns included student privacy, the recording of children’s voices, excessive screen use, misinformation and the possibility that computerized tutoring could reduce meaningful interaction with teachers.
The program at the center of that debate, Amira Learning, is a structured reading tool rather than an open-ended generative AI system such as ChatGPT. That is an important distinction—and it demonstrates how easily very different technologies can be grouped together.
The controversy was not simply about whether the program could help children read. It was also about transparency, parental choice and determining the appropriate role of technology in young children’s lives. You can read more in the San Francisco Chronicle’s coverage of the debate.
At the same time, concern is growing about children forming relationships with AI chatbots. A 2025 Common Sense Media study reported that nearly three out of four American teens surveyed had used an AI companion, with approximately half using one regularly.
These systems are designed to hold conversations that can feel personal, responsive and emotionally supportive. That may be appealing to a lonely or struggling child, but a chatbot is not a friend, counselor, teacher or trusted adult—and it should never be permitted to quietly assume those roles.

The Federal Trade Commission subsequently opened an inquiry into AI companion chatbots and their potential effects on children and teenagers. The agency requested information about how companies evaluate risks, protect minors, use personal information and generate revenue from engagement with these products. The Federal Trade Commission’s official announcement explains the scope of that inquiry.
The debate has now reached governments around the world. In September 2026, the European Commission introduced a proposed KIDS Act that would place new restrictions on children’s access to social media and require additional protections for online services used by minors, including AI companions and chatbots.
The proposal still requires approval and may change, but it illustrates the seriousness with which leaders are beginning to examine persuasive, addictive and emotionally manipulative technology. The European Commission’s official KIDS Act announcement provides more information about the proposal.
These concerns do not prove that all AI is dangerous or that technology should be removed from education. They demonstrate something more reasonable:
Children should not be left to navigate powerful technology without boundaries, supervision or the ability to think critically about what it tells them.
AI Can Produce an Answer Without Producing Understanding
One of the greatest educational dangers is not that AI will give a child a wrong answer—although it sometimes will.
The deeper danger is that it can provide an answer before the child has wrestled with the question.
Struggle is not always a sign that learning has failed. Productive struggle is often where learning begins.
When a child works through a difficult math problem, considers several possible explanations, searches for evidence, experiments with materials or rewrites a paragraph, the child is developing more than an answer. The child is building persistence, judgment, creativity, confidence and the ability to recover from frustration.
If artificial intelligence performs that process every time something becomes difficult, the finished work may look impressive while the child’s underlying ability remains unchanged.
A polished product is not necessarily evidence of learning.
This is why responsible use must include a “brain first” expectation. Children should be encouraged to think, attempt, question and create before asking technology to assist them.
AI might help a student generate additional examples, compare two ideas, practice vocabulary or receive another explanation of a difficult concept. It should not become the unseen author of the student’s thinking.
The goal is not merely to teach children how to obtain answers. It is to help them become people capable of evaluating those answers.
Children Need Reality, Not Just Information About Reality
A computer can show a child thousands of books, but it cannot recreate the experience of walking through a library, selecting one from a shelf and discovering an unexpected story.
An AI system can provide facts about athletes, artists, business owners and community leaders, but it cannot replace meeting a real person, looking them in the eye and asking a question.
A video can demonstrate physical movement, but it cannot make a child jump, balance, coordinate with others or discover what their own body can do.
A chatbot can describe teamwork, but it cannot reproduce the negotiation, patience, compromise and laughter that happen when children work together.
These experiences matter because children do not learn with their minds alone. They learn through their senses, bodies, relationships and emotions.
They learn by touching, building, reading, writing, speaking, listening, moving, observing and participating.
That is why CalKids creates opportunities for children to be physically and socially involved in their learning. A trip to the library, a handwritten assignment, an active group challenge, a community outing or a conversation with someone who has real-world experience can teach lessons that are difficult to measure on a screen.
These moments build curiosity and competence while reminding children that the world is something to participate in—not merely something to watch.
Technology Should Support the Teacher, Not Replace the Relationship
A skilled teacher or caring adult notices things technology cannot fully understand.
A teacher can see when a child is tired, embarrassed, overwhelmed, pretending to understand or afraid to ask for help. An adult can recognize when a student needs a different explanation—or when the child simply needs encouragement and another opportunity to try.
Good teaching depends upon relationships.
Children take intellectual risks when they feel safe. They ask questions when they believe someone is listening. They persevere when another person communicates, “I know this is difficult, but I also know you can learn it.”
Artificial intelligence can help generate practice questions, organize information or suggest different ways to explain a concept. It cannot replace the trust that develops between a student and a caring adult.
Education is not merely the delivery of information. It is the development of a human being.
What Responsible Technology Use Looks Like at CalKids
Responsible technology use is neither automatic acceptance nor automatic rejection. It requires purpose, supervision and judgment.
This balanced approach is reflected in UNESCO’s guidance for generative AI in education, which emphasizes data privacy, age-appropriate use, human agency and the meaningful rather than automatic use of technology.
The U.S. Department of Education’s toolkit for safe, ethical and equitable AI integration also encourages education leaders to evaluate benefits and risks carefully while maintaining human oversight.
Before introducing a digital tool, we should be able to answer several questions:
- What learning purpose does this tool serve?
- Is it appropriate for the child’s age and developmental level?
- Does it strengthen the child’s thinking—or perform the thinking for the child?
- What information does it collect?
- Is a knowledgeable adult available to supervise its use?
- Can the child explain what was learned without relying upon the tool?
- Is there a hands-on or human component that should accompany the digital activity?
We also want children to develop several essential habits.
Think Before Asking
Children should first attempt to form their own ideas, questions or solutions. Technology can then help them explore, test or improve those ideas.
Verify Before Believing
AI can produce inaccurate, outdated or completely invented information in a confident voice. Children need to understand that confidence is not the same as truth. Important claims should be checked against reliable sources.
Protect Private Information
Children should never casually enter their full name, home address, school details, passwords, medical information, personal photographs or private family matters into an AI system. Privacy must become a basic component of digital literacy.
Be Honest About Assistance
If AI helped brainstorm, revise, translate or research something, students should be able to say how it was used. Responsible use does not need to be secretive.
Keep Human Judgment in Charge
AI can offer suggestions, but a person must decide whether those suggestions are accurate, appropriate, ethical and useful.
Maintain Balance
Screen-based learning should be balanced with reading, handwriting, conversation, creativity, physical activity, outdoor experiences and face-to-face interaction.
We Are Preparing Children for More Than Their Next Assignment
Artificial intelligence will almost certainly be part of our children’s future. They may use tools that have not yet been invented in careers that do not yet exist.
That makes technological literacy important.
But their future will still require distinctly human qualities: curiosity, discernment, empathy, courage, communication, creativity, adaptability, integrity and the ability to work with other people.
Those qualities do not develop through convenience alone.
They grow when children make choices, accept responsibility, encounter different perspectives, solve real problems and discover that they can accomplish something through their own effort.
Our responsibility is not to keep children away from every new technology. Nor is it to place every new device or program into their hands simply because it exists.
Our responsibility is to help them develop the wisdom to use powerful tools without becoming dependent upon them.
At CalKids Learning Academy, we want children to become confident learners who can use technology when it serves a worthwhile purpose—and set it aside when the richer lesson is waiting in a book, a conversation, a project, a field trip or the world around them.
Because technology may help a child find an answer.
But learning how to think, connect, create and participate is what prepares that child for life.
